Review - Razer Sabertooth

The Razer Sabertooth is an awesome gaming pad. It's built on the shoulders of the Onza, Razer's previous programmable Xbox 360 controller, but this time it's got the balance pretty much perfect. Taking on board feedback from gaming fans, the experts at Razer have concentrated on getting the ergonomics right to ensure the Sabertooth is as usable and comfortable as it is customisable.

Although this is billed as a replacement Xbox 360 controller, it's not limited to console gaming - with Windows 8 you can plug any Xbox 360 controller straight into your PC, and be up and gaming almost instantly.

The Sabertooth's anti-sweat coating ensures you always have a firm grip, even in tense moments, and by placing the analogue sticks slightly higher than conventional controllers, it gives you more precision than ever - especially in first-person shooters.

An extra four buttons - two bottom triggers and an additional pair of shoulder buttons - put even more control at your fingertips, and you can even remove some of the keys completely if they feel unnatural or are getting in the way.

The Sabertooth's controls are completely customisable, and you can re-map the function of every button to suit the way you like to play. This is all done via the mini-OLED display at the gamepad's base, and the settings are saved to its internal memory. You can store two different profiles, and switch between them to reconfigure the controller in seconds.

Some people may not like the fact that the controller isn't wireless, but it means there's no danger of lag at critical gameplay moments, and helps keep the price down somewhat. Overall, you'd be hard pushed to find a better or more adaptable controller; its predecessor was banned from major league gaming tournaments because it gave players such an advantage, and this is even better. Serious gamers need a serious gamepad, and the Sabertooth is as serious as they get.
