Sapphire HD 7870 XT - Review

MD is looking to bolster its already impressive sub-£200 range with a half-and-half card. Created using the best of both the first and second tiers of its latest Southern Islands range, the HD 7870 XT is using the top-end Tahiti GPU, albeit a cut-down version. The fact that it can fit all that in a card for less than two ton seems impressive, but we've seen what damage can be down when you start slicing up your top-GPU with Nvidia's convoluted lineup, so is it a cut too far?

These are tough times for AMD, the computing industry's favourite plucky little underdog. Reports are that, with share prices at a low ebb and a dwindling pot of ready cash, the company may not be around in its current form for very much longer. That's a terrible thought for the industry, because lack of competition breeds complacency and a general lack of innovation.

Netgear WNDR4500 - Review

Netgear makes the excellent WNDR4500, one of the best wi-fi cable routers you can get. Building on that solid platform, it has now released the WNDR4700 'Centria', which aims to weld NAS box functionality to its router legacy. Opening the packaging for the first time, I was struck by exactly how big this device is. It looks like it might have eaten many smaller routers to get this big. 

 There's a reason why it's so large, because it can internally accept a 3.5" desktop SATA drive, which is then available as part of its network attached storage functionality. To test, I located an unused SATA disk, placed it inside the Centria as per the Netgear instructions, and powered it up. That's where the fun started, because attaching it to my internet network didn't actually allow me to administer the machine.

At the turn of this century, the Swedish file sharing platform The Pirate Bay was growing at a phenomenal rate, enabling internet users to share films and music free of charge. But Hollywood in particular does not pull any punches when it comes to such breaches of copyright and, in 2008, the founders of the platform were put on trial. Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Fredrik Neij and Peter Sunde live in their own digital world. They can hardly believe it when the court confuses megabit and megabyte. Seeing themselves as technicians whose aim is to run the world's largest web platform, they claim indignantly that their actions are about freedom, not money. The closer the film gets to them, the more pronounced their lofty perspective on reality becomes. 

Sony PlayStation 4 Destined for Christmas 2013 Release

Tech giant Sony has summoned the press to a New York City event on 20 February 2013. The company publicised the event on Thursday 31 January, tempting us to "see the future," giving a link to the website with few details.

For fans the important questions will be; when will the PS4 be on our shelves? What sort of hardware will it have?  Will it even be called the PlayStation 4?

There have been reports suggesting that Sony is calling the new PS4, 'Orbis'. This comes from a source speaking to Kotaku "who is not authorised to talk publicly about next-gen hardware but has shared correct information" with them before.

Supposing the Orbis name is in some way accurate, it's still uncertain whether the name is a codename like Durango or if the console will literally be called the Sony PlayStation.
